Council finances are in a critical state and there is a widespread concern among senior council figures about their long and short term resilience.
Councils are taking every step available to them to balance the budgets. Adult social care, housing & homelessness & children’s services have the greatest pressures on council finances. Of these, social care was the most frequently cited long term pressure.
Many Councils that dipped into their reserves last year plan to do so again this year. This means 54% (figure from the LGIU) we’re in a council that was spending reserves both last year and this coming year. This is a completely unsustainable situation.
Councils are increasingly reliant on commercial activities i.e. housing and commercial developments and asset sales.
I have invited speakers from both small and large local authorities to speak on these issues.
There will be time during the weekend for delegates to debate this very important subject and take an active part.
The National AGM will take place at 9.45am on Saturday the 25th November please see agenda attached.
